Pay It Back

Like many of us, I have always found it important to pay back to charitable causes.  Over the years I have been able to sponsor a variety of causes through the gruelling and sometimes daring sporting exploits of friends and colleagues as well as being able to take part in a few myself.  Now I am keen to contribute directly through the work that is done by Lury Furniture.

As a commitment to charity, Lury Furniture will donate 2% of the price of each piece of furniture produced to charity.  Below is a list of charities that are close to my heart, however, I would also be happy to donate to a charity of your choice as the commissioner of a piece.

Tujatane- The Tongabezi Trust School, Zambia (http://www.tujatane.com/)

In 2004 my fiancée and I were lucky enough to be able to go on holiday to Africa which included a stay in Zambia at a wonderful lodge called Tongabezi.  Behind the lodge was, at the time, a very small and humble school.  This little miracle of a school was, and continues to be, one of the extremely few places of education that is available to children in the community.

The school, officially opened on 1 May 1996 with only 15 pupils now has over 160 students between 3 and 15 years old.  The basic right and need for education is fundamental to society and in Africa also plays a major role in reducing the spread of HIV.

Make-A-Wish Foundation (http://www.make-a-wish.org.uk/)

Illness is never good, but when it affects children this is even worse.  Some children have illnesses that are so life threatening that sometimes all they know is the inside of a hospital with what most of us consider a normal life being completely alien to them.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses and raises the funds necessary to grant those wishes.   In granting these wishes, Make-A-Wish is able to transforms the lives of children giving them inspirational experiences that they would have thought impossible.

Cancer Research UK (http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/)

Unfortunately, cancer is something that has touched many people’s lives, either directly or indirectly and thus needs little explanation.  Although our knowledge and ability to beat cancer has increased over the years continuing research is fundamental to increase the rate of survival.

I will update the progress of the charitable contributions throughout the year.
